Here are the three parts:
- Central idea: Choose what is right and live.
- Doctrine: A good conscience.
- Practical application: Formation of conscience.
In the later half of the 20th century, a number of moral theologians (maybe better to call them “Catholic” writers), did their best to confuse people about what conscience is, in order to justify their particular sins.
Here is a handy, and I believe correct definition of conscience:
- Conscience is our reason, sitting in judgment on our actions, approving or condemning them, according to our understanding of the moral law.
CCC 1796 puts it this way: “Conscience is a judgment of reason by which the human person recognizes the moral quality of a concrete act.”
